Labor Relations Business Partner

OVERVIEW:

The Labor Relations Business Partner executes the labor relations strategy in the field at the direction of the Sr. Director, Employee & Labor Relations. This position serves as the "utility player" in the Employee & Labor Relations function, providing support to the local business partners in the areas of contract negotiations, contract administration, and positive employee relations. The Labor Relations Business Partner will negotiate small to medium contracts, manage day-to-day contract administration, such as providing interpretive guidance to management and grievance processing, support the Company's positive employee relations efforts, investigate employee relations matters, and perform other duties as assigned. This individual is the field level first point of contact for union representatives regarding all issues related to the collective bargaining agreement and the collective bargaining relationship.

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in executing labor strategy and all field activities within assigned geography.
  • Execute contract preparation and act in the capacity of lead negotiator or second chair in negotiations of select labor contracts as assigned.
  • Partner with Human Resources peers and other functional leaders on all employee communication campaigns - build credibility with and maintain positive morale amongst employees, gain trust of management, act as a business partner for operational leaders, etc.
  • Assist positive employee relations efforts throughout the Company to include the facilitation of supervisor, manager, and employee training sessions.
  • Provide coaching and counseling support to local management on labor and employee relations matters.
  • Execute effective training tools and conduct training for employees and managers in the area of labor and employee relations.
  • Work closely with the Sr. Director, Employee & Labor Relations, as well as in-house and outside counsel to proactively respond to labor issues, management/labor councils, mediations and arbitrations, etc.
  • Assist in execution of business continuation plans - pre-planning, logistics, staffing pool, accounting and payroll, overall communication during work stoppage, etc.
  • Manage and track grievances utilizing established grievance processes, evaluate for trends, identify training and development opportunities among management teams, develop plans for reduction of grievances and grievance expenditures with the business.
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of labor and employment law practices and current events in the legal field.
  • Assist in major investigations and fact finding on employee and labor relations issues within assigned geography.
  • Develop and maintain close working partnerships with business leaders and HR functional partners.
  • Participate in providing feedback to business leaders and HR partners on supervisor and manager development.


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors degree required, JD or Masters in ER/LR preferred
  • 3 years or more of relevant labor relations experience or relevant course study at accredited and recognized academic institution required
  • Prior CPG/Manufacturing experience highly preferred
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
  • Candidate must be a team player and work effectively with all levels within the organization
  • Must be willing to travel at least 60% of the time

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Juris Doctor Degree and/or a Bachelors or Masters degree in Labor/Industrial Relations, Human Resources, Business, Political Science, or Economics fields preferred.
  • 4+ years of labor relations/contract negotiations experience highly preferred.
  • Experience in labor negotiations, contract administration, and/or union communication campaigns preferred.
